What a fun weekend. I spent a great part of my Saturday picking peaches and shaking trees. YUM! They are so delicious and smell super good in my house right now. They are juicy and perfect for canning. When I’m not singing I love eating. The song, with the lyrics “I really love your peaches” did happen to pop into my head as I was collecting my selections. (When isn’t a song in my head?) I even made up a song about peaches when I was a kid and taught it to my sister who sang harmony on top of it. Yes it was a silly song. No I’m not recording it, but if you ask me about it, I’ll sing it to you for fun if you would like me to. I got to pick the fruit myself at an organic farm here in Arizona. These natural goodies are in season, and they are already being picked before it gets too hot in this desert. I am so used to waiting until September to eat this fresh fruit locally, but lucky me I get to eat them early living in a desert. I brought home 2 nice boxes and I will work on preserving them tomorrow.
My leg muscles are actually sore. (I know… I am out of shape) seriously every time I tried to stretch and reach for that perfect peach just above my head I stood on my tip toes and used my calf muscles more than I am used to. My muscles ache today but it was totally worth it because I am now the proud owner of some very tasty sweet treats and I cannot believe how much I’ve been eating them. I might turn into a peach if I keep downing them this much! HA! Then everyone would be able to say, “You’re a peach!” Literally! I’m feeling quite peachy keen today, if I do say so myself. (Sorry couldn’t help it with all this peachiness).
As I was carefully choosing each fruit before I picked it, I found a few peaches that had fallen to the ground and someone had put one on top of a branch and I saw it and thought it was lovely but as I picked it up, I looked it over and there was a nice hole in it which made me start thinking about the book, “James and the Giant Peach”. Have you read that book? I have fond memories of my grandmother reading that story to me as a child. The juicy gigantic peach that kept growing and growing…mmmm…. grandma always fell asleep on the couch while reading that story to us. It was a long book and I felt so sorry for that poor hungry boy who lived with such awful mean aunts. I really felt badly for him and silently cheered as he got away from them and ate his way to the center of the peach…
I love fresh fruit and when I get to pick it straight from the garden it is so darn good. I hope I have some left over by tomorrow! Either way I am loving my peaches right about now. I made some pancakes for breakfast this morning and added sliced peaches and cream on top. What’s next? Peach cobbler, peach pie, peach smoothie, peach jam… peach anyone? The peach possiblities are endless…
