The Feb. 4 concert with acclaimed pianist Marvin Goldstein and vocalist Vanessa Joy was the result of a lifelong friendship between CCC member Cary Troxel and the world-traveling musician. Troxel and Goldstein, friends for 50 years, first met in middle school in Fort Lauderdale. “I can remember Marvin carrying around an accordion the size of a Buick,” laughed Troxel. We’ve stayed in touch. I asked him to come and perform at our church. He said, “yes”. Those attending the free two-hour performance were captivated with Goldstein’s humor and talent on the ivories and with the wonderful message in song sang by vocalist Vanessa Joy. Goldstein chose selections from Phantom of the Opera, fiddler on the Roof and whimsical standards. Perhaps the highlight of the night was a 15-minute video of the life of Christ featuring hymns and special arrangements performed by Joy. “Talking can only go so far, music goes beyond.” said Goldstein.
